Now on to the TotalSpectrum Mini device.
What stood out immediately about the TotalSpectrum Mini
Strong red lights – Immediately I noticed how strong the led lights are. This was really surprising since I’m a regular user of red light therapy home devices. I needed to use the glasses that came with the device.
Heavy device – This was a really heavy device. In comparison to the TrueLight panel I have, the TotalSpectrum Mini was significantly heavier.
My results with the RLT Home Total Spectrum Mini
I originally set out to see if I could use the TotalSpectrum Mini device to reduce my psoriasis patches behind my ears and on my scalp (more on that below).
Here’s what I found:
Like with other red light devices, my skin was always so soft after using the device. Treating skin conditions and enhancing skin health is one of the known benefits of red light therapy, so I wasn’t surprised there.
What completely surprised me was the elimination of a cold – three times.
I first started using the TotalSpectrum device during cold and flu season. Having two small children makes my household prone to sickness. Since I was using the device regularly, I used it three times at the start of a cold. While my family got sick, the cold was knocked out of me by the next morning.
I shot an email to AJ, the owner of RLT Home, who let me know that’s a common occurrence for users of the device. Though I don’t have any science on this, my hunch is that it’s due to the ability for red light devices to reduce inflammation.
Red light therapy for psoriasis
One of my main skin concerns is psoriasis. I’ve struggled for over 20 years with it. Since I’ve seen the studies showing positive effects of red light therapy on psoriasis, I decided to give it a try with the TotalSpectrum Mini.
I didn’t notice much of a change, though it did clear up a bit. However, I think it’s important to note a few things.
1. Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition. Many factors go into healing psoriasis, including diet and lifestyle. I’ve been a bit off track with my health lately, along with grieving the loss of my dad. The stress of the grief, along with various other life changes likely played a huge part in not seeing results yet.
2. Since I’ve had psoriasis for so long, it will probably take quite a bit of time sticking to my wellness routines, including red light therapy, before I see a significant improvement.
I still think if you have psoriasis, it’s absolutely worth investing in red light therapy treatments.
Getting your own device for home use, setting realistic expectations, and making a conscious effort to focus on mindfulness routines and working on your nutrition is also going to help you get psoriasis relief.
I do use my red light therapy devices for joint pain related to psoriatic arthritis, and notice an immediate relief when I use them.
Interview with the owner of RLT Home
Because I haven’t used the device in every way imaginable, I asked one of the owners, AJ, to answer a few questions to round out this review.
I asked AJ the following questions and his answers are below.
Why did you decide to start a red-light therapy company?
As lifelong biohackers, we have always been passionate about optimizing health and performance.
In 2021, we discovered the incredible potential of red light therapy and delved into the extensive research surrounding it. We found over 2,000 human trials conducted on photobiomodulation (red light therapy), revealing a wide range of benefits across various wavelengths and use cases.
However, at the time, only devices utilizing 660nm and 850nm wavelengths were available on the market.
Recognizing the opportunity to provide a more comprehensive solution, we decided to develop the first multi-spectrum device that could offer greater benefits than existing products.
This drive to bring cutting-edge health technology to consumers led us to establish our red light therapy company.
What makes RLT Home different from other devices?
RLT Home stands out from other devices in several key ways:
1. Optimized Beam Angles: Our devices feature 30-degree beam angles, which we believe revolutionize the red light therapy space. While wider beam angles can waste a significant amount of light, our devices maintain much higher irradiances compared to competitors, even at greater distances from the device. This ensures that users receive optimal light exposure for maximum benefits.
2. Voice-Controlled Operation: RLT Home devices are the only ones on the market that offer complete voice recognition and control. This hands-free operation provides users with unparalleled convenience and ease of use.
3. Privacy-Focused Design: We prioritize user privacy, making RLT Home TotalSpectrum devices the only ones in the market with a strong focus on this aspect. Our devices do not connect to the Internet, either directly or through any apps, ensuring that user data remains secure. Additionally, voice recordings are automatically deleted every 15 seconds, further protecting user privacy.
4. Pre-Programmed Performance Modes (Patented): We have developed and built pre-programmed performance modes into our devices based on extensive clinical human trials. These modes offer users an incredibly quick and efficient way to start therapy, utilizing the most effective wavelengths and intensities for targeted results.
This patented feature sets RLT Home apart from competitors and ensures that users can easily access evidence-based therapy protocols.
What unique ways have you used the device to notice benefits?
As avid biohackers and red light therapy enthusiasts, we have personally experimented with various ways to incorporate RLT Home devices into our daily routines to maximize the benefits. Some unique ways we have used the device include:
During Workouts: We have found that using the TotalSpectrum ELITE device during low-intensity workouts, such as yoga or stretching, can help improve flexibility, reduce muscle soreness, and speed up post-workout recovery. The red and near-infrared light penetrates deep into the tissues, promoting circulation and cellular energy production.
Post-Sauna Sessions: After spending time in a sauna, we like to use one of the RLT Home devices to enhance the detoxification and relaxation benefits. The combination of heat therapy and red light therapy can help improve skin health, reduce inflammation, and promote a sense of overall well-being.
Meditation and Mindfulness: We have incorporated the RLT Home TotalSpectrum ULTRA into our post meditation and mindfulness practices. The soothing, warm light helps create a calming atmosphere, promoting relaxation and reducing stress. We find that using the device after these sessions can lead to a deeper sense of tranquility and mental clarity.
What has been the biggest benefit you’ve seen/heard from users of the RLT Home device?
The biggest benefits users have experienced from using RLT Home TotalSpectrum devices include significant pain relief, particularly for chronic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and back pain.
Additionally, many users report improvements in skin health, such as enhanced complexion, reduced wrinkles, and rejuvenated skin. Other noted advantages are better sleep quality, increased energy, and effective muscle recovery after workouts.
Without being overly technical, can you explain why your device requires protective glasses when many others don’t? Most of the good devices I’ve used have the same wavelengths of light, but the RLT Home TotalSpectrum is substantially stronger than others. Why is that?
Regarding the use of protective glasses, it’s primarily a precautionary measure. Despite the wavelengths of red and infrared light we use being completely safe, the intensity of the light our TotalSpectrum devices produce can be very bright.
Using protective eyewear can help to mitigate any potential discomfort due to the brightness, making your therapy sessions more comfortable. It’s important to note that everyone’s light sensitivity is different, and what may be uncomfortable for one user might not be for another.
Regarding the strength of our TotalSpectrum devices, our line of products are designed to deliver optimum results derived from the latest research and clinical trials. We have ensured our panels produce strong, high-quality light to maximize the efficacy of your red light therapy sessions.
Why would I use the pulsing feature over the standard setting for continuous light?
The pulsing feature in our TotalSpectrum devices is designed based on various studies that suggest pulsing light can sometimes be more effective than continuous light for certain therapy applications.
Pulsing light has been found to possibly penetrate deeper into tissues than continuous light. This could make it more useful in targeting deeper-seated injuries or areas of inflammation.
In addition, pulsing might reduce heat generation and potentially increase cellular response to light therapy, which could make it a better choice for some specific conditions or treatments. However, the effectiveness can vary and research is still ongoing in this field.
It’s worth noting that some studies have found no significant difference in effectiveness between pulsing and continuous light. We advise our customers to experiment with both settings to see which works best for their individual needs.
A problem I’ve noticed with red light therapy is that it takes a while to see results. Then people get discouraged and give up. Is there something a new user can do to speed up results? Or have you seen a particular ailment resolve quickly using this device?
It’s true that red light therapy usually takes some time to see significant results. On average, profound effects are observed 4 to 8 weeks from beginning therapy. Depending upon the initial condition, some results might be observed as soon as two to three weeks from the beginning of treatment. The timing varies by person and the severity of symptoms.
To potentially accelerate the effects, it’s important to maintain a consistent therapy routine. For instance, sessions often last between 5-20 minutes, with frequencies ranging from daily to several times a week, depending on the treatment goal. Using the device regularly as directed can increase the chances of seeing results faster.
Varying the areas you target throughout your sessions might also help. For example, if you are using the therapy for general wellness or skincare, alternating between your face, hands, or any other areas of concern may prove beneficial.
As far as ailments that may show quicker resolution, conditions located closer to the surface of the skin, like acne, might show results quicker as compared to deep tissue issues. However, it largely depends on the individual and the specifics of their condition.
What are the side effects of red-light therapy?
Red light therapy is generally safe and gentle, and it’s been approved by the FDA. However, as with any treatment, there can be some potential side effects.
- Some unaccredited devices can emit high EMFs so it’s important to use devices that have received CE and RoHS certificates like our TotalSpectrum series.
- In some people, prolonged use can cause headaches. If experiencing discomfort, it’s recommended to take breaks and not to exceed the recommended session times.
- There have been cases of minor skin reactions such as itching and redness. If this occurs, it’s suggested to take a break from using the device and try again. If this persists, discontinuing use is recommended.
Using red light therapy excessively can lead to ineffectiveness. - Overexposure to red light, especially late at night, could potentially disrupt circadian rhythms and affect sleep quality.
Just remember, while side effects are uncommon, it’s always important to listen to your body, and if you notice anything unusual or discomforting, to stop treatment and consult a healthcare provider.
Final Thoughts – Pros and Cons of the RLT Home TotalSpectrum Mini
As a user and lover of red light therapy devices, I know it’s important to have a good device. I truly think the RLT Home has great devices with the TotalSpectrum series.
When looking to purchase a device, I’d suggest choosing one based on what you are trying to achieve. For example, if you’re mainly wanting a device as part of a facial skincare routine, a red light therapy face mask may be a great option. But if you like versatility, a smaller device that you can use to target many different areas (like the TotalSpectrum Mini) is a great idea.
What I love about the TotalSpectrum Mini is that it’s portable and you can easily move it around to target different areas, including your face.
During our interview above, AJ mentioned the biggest benefits of using the device, according to users, has been pain relief and better skin. I have personally also noticed these benefits. And I notice them immediately after using a good red light therapy device.
Pros of the TotalSpectrum Device
- Ease of use – There are specific settings on the device for whatever you are targeting. For example, there are buttons for “Skin Care,” “Sleep Optimization,” and “Muscle Recovery” (to name a few) so you don’t have to guess which different wavelengths you should be using for your targeted health benefits.
- Strong red lights – When I turn the device on, I can feel it’s power and I’m confident the device is working.
- Affordability – The TotalSpectrum Mini device is the cost of about 3-4 professional red light therapy sessions and is just under $400. While it is an investment, you’re going to love the results and love that you can use it any time, from the comfort of your home.
Cons of the TotalSpectrum Device:
- The device is a bit heavy. It’s light enough to move around, but weighs significantly more than the TrueLight Energy Square.
- The cord wasn’t very long on my device. I received a device last year and was told the cords have since been updated. So this shouldn’t be an issue anymore.
Overall, I highly recommend the TotalSpectrum Mini. If you’re looking to target a larger area, the TotalSpectrum Max and the TotalSpectrum Elite use the same technology, but include more LEDs to cover a larger area.
